Some jobs just need doing regularly whether we like them or not. Mowing the lawn, trimming  hedges, keep your driveway tidy, but most of all cleaning.

There can’t be many of us who like cleaning, though not many of us would deny the need for it. Keep the car clean, keep the house clean, and don’t forget … keep the gutters clean.

It is an essential part of the maintenance of your property, but it may not be a job for you. It is not the easiest job, even for the budding DIYer. It is messy, gutters are high and not always easily accessible. They are often out of sight and out of mind. But why is gutter cleaning so important?

Rain gutters are usually just below roof level, catching the rain coming down off your pitched roof. Unfortunately, they often catch a lot more than that and grow things too! They are a prime catchment area for leaves and twigs, and moss can either grow in gutters, or fall from where it had been growing on the roof. Birds are also known to build nests in gutters.

This is all bad news as it means that the natural flow of water – off the roof, into the gutter, and down the downspout – will be impeded and not all the water will end up where it should go.

Water pooling can cause large drips over the gutter; damage to the gutter pipes, excess weight in the gutters and can be a breeding ground for insects and mould. Also, pooled water can become frozen in winter, giving you cracked gutters and further problems at the worst possible time of the year.

These are all good reasons to keep your gutters clean and free of obstruction.

However, knowing that your gutter may be the root of some problems may still not entice you to get up the side of the house and see what’s going on. Indeed, for most people it is not recommended. It is a dirty job, up high and you’ll have to get rid of all that debris.

This is where a building maintenance or cleaning company will be able to help.

With specialist equipment they can firstly reach the gutters easily, and secondly clean them with tools that may be too expensive for people to own just to clean out their gutters twice a year.

Don’t avoid the job, and don’t risk climbing a ladder and poking a rake around while balancing precariously.

Give the job to the experts. Let them take the safety precautions, use expert equipment and do your gutter cleaning job for you.
